The Challenge: Compliance, Interoperability & Clinical-Grade Reliability

A healthcare provider engaged us to build a comprehensive EHR platform capable of supporting complex clinical workflows while aligning with modern interoperability and compliance requirements. The system needed to manage patient records, streamline clinical operations, and integrate with existing healthcare infrastructure — all while maintaining strong data security and reliability standards.

In addition, the platform had to support a patient-facing portal, enabling individuals to access their health data, manage appointments, and communicate with care teams in a secure and user-friendly environment.

A Comprehensive Clinical Platform, Designed for Scale

FHIR-Based Health Records

Built around HL7 FHIR (R4) standards, with support for SNOMED CT and LOINC coding systems, enabling structured, interoperable clinical data exchange.

Patient Portal & PHR

A patient portal providing access to medical records, appointment scheduling, prescription tracking, and communication with healthcare providers.

Laboratory Services Integration

Lab order and results management with support for commonly used HL7 v2.x messaging formats, ensuring compatibility with existing lab systems.

Scalable AWS Architecture

A hybrid architecture leveraging AWS Lambda for serverless workloads and Fargate for containerized services, enabling elastic scaling and flexibility.

API Gateway Layer

A unified API layer (GraphQL gateway) aggregating multiple backend services and simplifying frontend integration.

Design System & Frontend

A component-driven design system built with Storybook, supporting consistent UI across modular frontend applications.

The decisions that shaped the platform

01
FHIR Platform Validation
We implemented a FHIR-compliant platform aligned with R4 specifications and validated it using ONC’s Inferno testing suite, ensuring adherence to modern interoperability standards.

02
Terminology Services Integration
We integrated terminology services supporting SNOMED CT and LOINC, with additional mapping capabilities leveraging UMLS to ensure consistent and standardized clinical data across the platform.
SNOMED CT · LOINC · UMLS
03
Legacy System Integration via Facade
We designed a facade layer bridging modern FHIR-based services with existing legacy systems, enabling seamless integration and gradual platform adoption without disrupting clinical operations.
Interoperability · Systems Architecture
04
Collaborative Delivery Model
We worked alongside the client in a hybrid team setup, following an iterative delivery approach with continuous integration and testing to ensure predictable releases and consistent quality.
